Built from Skratch is back. Not like we went anywhere, but it’s been a second since we’ve been able to update the site. What better way to kick things in gear than with Bay Area, San Francisco legend San Quinn. Quinn takes a look at some of the newer cars in the Veracom fleet, and talks about his new album, the Bay and a whole lot more. San Quinn is still making that dope street shit..need we say more?

Next up, we have more Bay Area hood stars, Dem Hoodstarz. The crew gets their grown man on and lets you know what’s really hood. We also have dope indie filmmaker and producer Joslyn Rose Lyons from Jog 9. You probably know her work from the Prince Ali/Rakaa Iriscience video she produced with MYX. Get to know her!

Finally we travel into the city of San Francisco and talk with the fine folks at Guitar Center. Audiophiles have been hitting GC up for years, and few people know Guitar Center started right here in the Bay Area. Check out what’s new and what the industry is using. All right here on Built from Skratch, your source for what’s what in hiphop today!

When it all boils down to it, it’s really all about the music. If the music isn’t good, then what’s the point, right? There have been so many bullshit attempts at reshaping the culture lately, that people seem to have forgotten that this is still all about hiphop.

This brings us to something we here at BFS are extremely excited to present to you: The 1st Annual Built from Skratch Producer Battle! What we did was take 2 of the nicest producers in the Bay Area and give them a song to sample from and make a beat out of. The freshest beat wins. Simple as that. The producers we chose for this were Keelay from the Sole Vibe crew (produced tracks for the likes of Little Brother, Blu, Tha Alkaholiks, Planet Asia, etc.) and Nick Andre, DJ/Producer and Co-Founder of Bay Area record label Slept On Records (produced tracks for Gift of Gab, Foreign Legion, Lyrics Born, etc.) Two dope beats were made, but only 1 producer can move on and stake claim to the title of Built from Skratch’s Production King!

Next up we have one of the best, most gifted DJ’s on the planet, DJ Scene. Hailing from Seattle, and now residing in Las Vegas, Scene started with a backpack and has graduated to crack rap! NO DAYS OFF! Scene went from being one of the NW’s top turntablists to one of the top DJ’s in the world. Our dude is one of the hardest working DJ’s on the planet! For over 12 years DJ Scene has moved thousands of crowds with his progressive style. His trademark technique of scratching and mixing 80s, Classic Rock and Old School with current Hip Hop and Rock, sets fresh standards in every venue he performs.

Finally we have one of the freshest urban couture shops around San Jose’s Connoisseur533. Let them tell it…”The Connoisseur Culture is more than a business entity in the realms of street wear; we are in the business of making you the consumer as undeniably satisfied as possible through the mediums of public relations, writing, clothing, photography, art, and print. We are based in the paradise of San Jose, California with a full-service staff ready to work with you on your needs of writing, publicity, photography, clothing, and even print. Let the Connoisseur Culture perpetuate your business needs into full-scale satisfaction.”

Episode 9 of Built from Skratch is now in the deck. Keep in mind we are cranking out a new episode each week, and it only gets better. In this episode, we travel to Oakland, CA to visit revolutionary Brooklyn transplant Sabac Red. Sabac has been in the game for a grip, and has seen it all. A member of the now defunct supergroup Non Phixion, he’s seen the world thru this hiphop shit. A true hiphop diplomat, historian, and activist, Sabac Red can be found working with today’s inner city kids helping them improve their chances in today’s cold cold world. The rest of time he’s on the road or in the studio, working on future classics. It’s music with a message.

Jason Mateo is an internationally recognized poet, performer, arts organizer, and activist. Mateo’s proudest achievement has been working for Youth Speaks – a San Francisco-based literary art non-profit, where he is Program Director. Through Youth Speaks, Mateo has visited hundreds of schools throughout the country, profoundly affecting thousands of High School students by encouraging voice, leadership, and creative energy.

Finally we have the illmatic hiphop barber shop the San Mateo Zoo. You want hiphop culture? You want an ill fade or a line-up? You wanna cop some dope indie 12″s you can’t and won’t find anywhere? You want sneakers? Then come out and visit Shane Nesbitt and his crew at this dope spot in the Bay’s Peninsula. This all in one hiphop hotspot is becoming a Bay Area landmark. Come on thru!

Built from Skratch is that new crack. The kind that keeps the fiends coming at 4 in the morning for more of that goody good. That good crack that the Chef cooked up on the Purple Tape. Pure rocks son! This week we are proud to present the Frontline – the Richmond, CA duo of Locksmith and LEFT. Together the crew has blazed a new trail of left coast vernacular into the ears of hungry heads everywhere. These battle tested MC’s speak the truth and are in this game to make a difference with the music and in the community.

Next, we sit down with KMEL-FM (1065.1) DJ Chuy Gomez. For Bay Area radio listeners, Chuy Gomez is hip-hop. The DJ is No. 1 among younger listeners, ages 18 to 34. What makes him so popular? It could be his boundless energy, strong local ties, longevity and an outgoing, approachable personality. But the thing that resonates with listeners is his street credibility. Bay Area stand up! Chuy Gomez is in here!

Finally we have BBoy extraordinaire Moshen Sickness from the world renowned Skill Methodz Crew. An aficionado of the culture, graphic designer, and music lover, Moshen has seen it all. From recuperating from injury to pushing himself and his crew to the limit – Moshen does it all for the love of the art – and as his crew missions statement reads, “Foundation is the key to creativity.” So tune in or get tuned out. Holla Abdul!

Built from Skratch is Back with Episode 6! What do you get when you combine three of the Bay Area’s and the indie rap game’s top talents into one huge super project? The Mighty Underdogs! The Gift of Gab (Blackalicious, Quannum), Lateef The Truth Speaker (Latyrx, Maroons, Quannum), and Headnodic (Crown City Rockers) represents the Bay’s next big thing! The trio talks about the state of the game, their new EP, which is in stores now, and their upcoming full length LP, “DROPPING SCIENCE FICTION”… (Featuring Damian and Julian Marley, K-OS, Lyrics Born, Chali 2na, DJ Shadow, Zion, Tash from the Liks, Casual, and more).

Next up, we have the incomparable Frisco based culture influencers – the one and only Fat Lace! Check out the history behind the magazine and the magic behind their recently opened store. Their take on the culture has been often imitated but never duplicated. Stay Fresh!

Finally, we have the ridiculously talented rhyme inventor Prince Ali. Combine Golden era nostalgia, a tight relationship with rap pioneers Hieroglyphics (Cas, I need me some jeans!), and some next level spit…BLAM – you get Prince Ali! This isn’t your Mom’s Bay, son! You Minor, we MAJOR…all this on Episode 6 of Built from Skratch. Don’t forget to bug your local cable operators and tell them you need some Myx TV in your life. This is Nightclubberlang signing off…with a Key…SISSIES!
